A advancing life-limiting illness can be a difficult condition to confront-let alone to talk about with your loved ones and friends. Yet, for many of us, the day may come when we need to confront limitations resulting from serious illness.

Consider how we would like to be treated if out condition became terminal?

How might we like our life's final chapters to unfold?

The Vienna Hospice and Palliative Care team advocate for the rights of terminally ill patients and their families. We believe that patients should be apprised of their clinical prognosis and be involved in the decision-making process that determines how their end-of-life care is provided.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY/PHYSICAL THERAPY

An Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist can evaluate the ability of your loved one to accomplish activities of daily living (ADL) to carry out common everyday tasks, such as bathing, getting dressed, brushing one's teeth, eating, walking, getting in and out of bed, going to the bathroom, etc. If patients experience difficulties performing these types of skills, the therapist can device a therapeutic plan designed to help patients regain their independence. Occupational and Physical Therapy can often help with the patient's self-esteem, confidence and attitude. Sometimes, different adaptive or assisting devices are used to help patients accomplish their ADLs. The therapist can teach your loved one special techniques that will help utilize energy more efficiently. Helping your loved one continue much of his/her daily routine can dramatically improve their quality of life.

DIETICIANS

Help patients achieve the best nutritional standards given the current state of his or her health. Dieticians have much experience in dealing with the dietary challenges that often affect the terminally ill. In conjunction with the physician, dieticians will advise on meal plans, food preparation and even on how to serve the patient properly. All patients entering hospice care will be evaluated at the time of admission into program. If there is a need for nutritional assistance, a dietician will be provided to assist and educate patients and their families.
